Supporting Character

MarvelSuperHeroesandSidekicks

Marvel Super Heroes and their Sidekicks.

I will admit that I am uninteresting to most people.  I am “mostly harmless” and “slightly above average” in most regards.  Certainly nothing that really stands out when you look at me or even talk to me.  I am a Supporting Character and that is what we do.  We downplay ourselves in favor of the stronger character, with the more interesting story.  I am James Bond’s “Q” or Batman’s Robin… well maybe not quite Robin.  One of the many Robin’s does get his own identity after a while, as Nightwing. I am still less interesting than the people I surround myself with.

Right now, I am a Supporting Character.  I support people that pass some sort of instinctual criteria that I have.  I look for the lions in the making.  People who are fighting for their dreams and goals.  The people who keep getting back up after getting knocked down, no matter how beat up they may be.

“Fall seven times, stand up eight.” Your Supporting Character will be there to help you every time.  We will brush you off, put bandages on your wounds and help you find a way to get back on the path.  That is what we do.  We are quite happy doing it to.  It is our way to touch greatness or be a part of something bigger and better than ourselves.

I would not mind being like Robin, getting my own identity after a while. I do have my own story and dreams.  They are not as dramatic as Batman’s, but they still exist.  I have been supporting the lions for quite a while, I might be ready to join them in the fight for my dreams.

It has taken a while for me to reach the point where I want to be a Main Character.  There is a crazy amount of courage required to take the steps.  You have to trust in yourself and know your limits.  You have to have your own cast of Supporting Characters.  You have to trust that your Support System will let you bounce back if you do fail.  So much courage is needed, so much trust.

I know what I am capable of as a Support Character.  I do not know if that translates well to being a Main Character.  I can only hope it is and have the courage to take that leap.  Like many of those that I have supported.

One Flower at a Time

Busy already… or is it again?

I am working on TWO large scale drawings. The largest one is 3ft by 4ft, the largest sheet of paper I could buy at Blick.  It is intimidating to start something so large with one nib and stylus… 12sq feet is huge.  Having painted large walls and theater sets, this is not the largest project I have undertaken.  Just, teeny pen and all that paper to cover.

How does one do it?

One section at a time.

I avoid looking at the thing as a whole, as much as possible.  This section is blossoms or hair or leaves.  Nothing else exists until this section is done.  One stroke, one shape, one flower at a time.

You do have to step away from time to time to asses the drawing as a whole.  Are the parts going to come together properly?  Is this line going to meet with that line?  Are the colors going to work?  Where does this go?

It really is the same as a rough time in life.  Take it one hour, day, week, month at a time.  Do not look at the big picture.  It is immense and intimidating.  You do what you can to make it through an hour.  Then the day.  Then the week.  Soon you have made it through a whole month.  You still need to step away every so often to make sure that you are on the right path, that things are going to fit together.

Life is challenging and happens to everyone.  We all go through easy times and times that test our abilities to cope.

I have an outlet for these things.  I draw it, or representations of it.  I am very thankful for this.

Not everyone has an outlet that is healthy.  People get into drugs, sex and violence.

I know I am not equipped to help much.  I can be an ear, an arm, a rock.  Each of us can do little things to help those in our circle.  In the end it is up to each person to live their life.  To draw their own picture.

Letting someone help with your drawing is hard.  You are letting someone else’s “soul” touch yours.  Even the tiniest bit of help will change your drawing.  It is hard to step away from the drawing long enough to check the progress and see if the help is working.

Yet it must be done so you can see if things are where they should be.

Work on your drawing, one flower at a time.

Hydrangeas! Lots of them. This is just one corner. I just started planning out the 1/3rd of the drawing.

The Difference of One

It is hard, sometimes, to not realize that you are only a single voice in a large crowd and not many, if any, will ever hear you.

There are many other analogies for this:

One light in the sky.

One grain of sand on the beach.

One flower in the garden.

What you say or how you say it will not make it very far, in most cases.  Your message gets lost before you can finish thinking about it.

Everyone wants to be heard / seen/ felt… sensed in some way.  Some people shout, some talk softer, some band together under one cause and their voices become much louder.

However you do it you just want to reach people.  If you goal is to reach 10 people and shouting works, great.  If you want to reach 100 people and speaking quietly works, go for it.  If you want to reach a country or make an impact on the world, joining a group is usually the way to go.  It does not matter how you do it, you want to reach and connect with others.

I think the thing that depresses me the most, is that all the shouting, shining, and growing, will probably not make a difference in the world.  Not even in your own garden, beach or sky. Everything will be the same as it ever was, had you not existed.

Everything we do is for naught but our own self-importance. Meaningless…

Then…

You talk to a friend (or a fan, or family, perhaps) and your view point changes.  You realize that you made a difference to someone.  That their life is less without you in it.

Even being able to effect one life is worth all the shouting, shining, and growing you can do.

Be the best light you can, shine your brightest.  Be the best grain of sand, best flower, best voice you can be.  Do what you can to make one life better.

One life that benefits from anything you do, is all one needs to keep going.

Proof that one voice, one light, one grain or one flower can improve the world.

Thank you friend.

My birthday greeting for my friend. You may not feel like it, but you are amazing just the way you are.

And Happy Birthday J

Thoughts of a Sleepless Me : Water

Of all the places I have lived, I like the places with easy access to water.  I like water.

Water has a music that calms the soul.  In cold weather it is the sound of tiny bells tinkling down a path.  In the summer it is barely audible over the call of birds or the wind communing with the trees.  In the Spring, when the rains come, it is a loud shout, telling the world to move.  In the fall, drained of its energy, it becomes a slow wanderer, looking for a place to rest its head.

Mini_River

A small flow of water as the tide heads out

I could sit for hours by a creek, listening to its song.  When listening was not enough, or the wind was particularly chatty, I could watch the light dance on the water, as it moved down the mountain.  Sparkles and bells. The patterns of the sparkles and the sound of the bells and the song of the wind.

When I lived near the Ocean, the water roared.  The difference between a house cat meow and a lions roar.  Creeks and streams meow, the Ocean roars.  I sat on the docks for hours, just looking at the water.  The sun danced across the surface with the ebb and flow.  I would look into the water and see what was there.  Life happened in the water there.

Even when I lived near the great and, sadly, polluted Potomac river, I enjoyed the water.  One could sit and watch the colors of the sunset/rise reflect off the water and know peace.

Water always knows where it is going.  Down, towards the ocean, to join with the greater.  Even the rain, taken from the larger, falling as tiny drops, know to go down, back towards the larger bodies.  Seep into the ground, become a lake, move towards a stream, join to a creek, become  river, always moving towards the Ocean.  Repeat.

Be like water, the wise ones say.  It is flexible.  Nothing gets in the way of water.  It just moves out of the way.  There are times when water will rage and overcome obstacles by force.  Water knows where it is going, and has not issue with taking it’s time to get there.

Flow.

Go with the Flow

What I had planned for today and what happens for today are two different things.

At some point in the day I ran out of “Happy” and just did not have any more energy to deal with things.  Everything took so much effort.  Reading, typing, writing, talking, thinking, everything.

Today we have another one over the weekend.  The paper pool, or maybe one of the happier ones?

Happier it is.  In a terrible cellphone pic.  I will set up my scanner this weekend!

What Matters

Yesterday I read about another shooting of police.  I read about racists and murders condoning more murders and in the same breath say that it is their duty to fight for equality.

I do not understand how this can make sense to anyone.  How can you reach equality through murder?

All_Life_Matters_Tree

All life matters. Together is the only way we can grow and succeed.

Last night I went to bed thinking “What can I do?”

I did some research to try and understand everyone’s point of view.  I read news, blogs, tweets, rants and raves.  I still do not understand.

A life is a life.

As a society we only seem to value the life of a person who contributes to society OR one that is willing to pay for the right to be heard (more common now-a-days is seems.)

Everyday billions of people get up, go to their various jobs and return home to take care of their families.  All we want to do is do what must be done to survive.  In most cases this does not include killing people (war excluded.)

Our jobs should not make us targets.  The color of our skin, religion (or lack of,) gender, sexual orientation or creed (nation of birth) should NOT make us a target of another’s prejudice.

I realize that the different races did some horrible things to some other races.  Heck, race A – tribe A did horrible things to race A – tribe B.  What happened to our ancestors trickles down into today.  We should be able to learn and over come these horrors in our history.

We will not be able to master fates, or the fate of the planet we call Earth, until we are able to value all life.

I thought long about what I could do.

It came to me creating a small icon.  I hope that others will share it (maybe improve upon it.)

ALL LIFE MATTERS

A Head Full of Other People’s Problems

I have a pretty good life.  I have a full time job (even if it is boring.)  I have a great spouse and marriage and I have no children.  I have money to pay the bills and even some extra to spend.  I get to go out and have fun, relax and enjoy myself when  I want to.

My life is so “pretty good” that I let my head get full of other people’s problems.  Other people’s money problems, family problems, and even friend problems. All these problems that I have read about or spoken about roll around in my head waiting for me to come up with a solution. Even if it is not my place to work on these, it happens.

head and bulb

The gears in my head are always turning.

I realized that I am quite boring in person.  Even though I have done and seen things, I cannot tell the story well (just not one of my skills.)  I think have always supplemented my boringness with the problems of other people, things for me to mull over and solve.  Got money issues, I will mull over it and see if I can come up with anything that might help.  Significant other dressing like a slob, I will mull over it and see if I can suggest anything that will change the behavior (just let them know what you think of their cloths.)  Need an idea for a story, game or other project?  Let me mull it over, I will have something for you, probably lots of somethings.

The only time this becomes a problem is when I cannot come up with a feasible solution.  I have tons of ideas on how to market your product (I really do) but you are going to have to invest time and probably money.  If you are broke, that does not really help any.  I wish I had more money to throw at the problem for you, but I cannot afford to do that (not to the amount needed, anyway.)  I have time to help, but I cannot DO it for you.  I wish I could, but I am not as skilled at      (your skill here)    as you are.

All I can do is give you suggestions.  If you choose to put the time and effort into the suggestion, I know it will turn out well.

Today my head is full of other people’s problems, and I cannot do much about it.  I just let them float around and propagate solutions that will probably never be used, so sad.

picassoNot being able to act on the ideas is the most frustrating thing for me, and others like me.  The ideas are there, like ripe apples on a tree.  All you have to do is reach up and take them.  I would rather you take my idea and run with it, then let it rot on the tree.  Yes the idea can come back next time the tree fruits, but it is not always the same and not always as tasty.  Taking an idea is not stealing if I am okay with it.  Plus you taking an idea, vs letting it rot, will allow me to have more ideas, better ideas.

I would really love to make all my ideas a reality on my own, but I am not really able to.  I do not have the skills needed for many of them.

So, let me know if you are in need of an idea.  I will mull over it and let you know.  I will even sketch things out.
